Zeynep Sönmez advanced to the second round of the Merida Open Women's Tennis Tournament held in Mexico by defeating the 8th seeded Greek Maria Sakkari 2-0.
Zeynep, ranked 88th in the rankings, faced world number 30 Sakkari in the first round of the "hard court" tournament in Merida.
The 22-year-old national tennis player, who won the first WTA tournament title of her career at the Merida Open last season, left the field victorious with sets of 7-5 and 6-2.
Zeynep will face Magda Linette, ranked 37th in the world, in the second round of the organization, which was raised from the WTA 250 to 500 level this year.
