India's aviation regulator has confirmed that the plane crashed outside the airport's perimeter and said that it had dispatched teams to the crash site.

This morning, UK time, an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad.

The flight was headed for London Gatwick, police have said there were at least 242 passengers on board.

The Air India flight bound for the UK was carrying at least 242 passengers, local media has reported.

A Boeing 787 Dreamliner can carry around 300 passengers at maximum capacity.

Officials have not yet released any information on passenger numbers and nationalities.
