Volodymyr Zelensky has said he would be willing to give up being Ukraine's president if doing so would bring a lasting peace and membership of NATO.

The Ukrainian leader told government officials in Kyiv on Sunday that if they needed him to give up his post to achieve peace, then he was ready.

Mr Zelensky went on to tell a reporter who asked if he was willing to trade his office for peace: "I can trade it for NATO."

His comments appeared to be aimed at suggestions by US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin that elections should be held in Ukraine despite legislation in the war-torn country prohibiting them during martial law.

Ukraine's leader has expressed fears Mr Trump's push for a swift peace deal would result in lost territory for Ukraine and vulnerability to future Russian aggression.

Washington has insisted Mr Zelensky would be involved if and when peace talks actually start.

Mr Trump prompted alarm and anger in Ukraine last week when he suggested Kyiv started the war and Mr Zelensky was acting like a "dictator" by not holding elections.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called Mr Zelensky soon after Mr Trump's criticism in a show of "ironclad" support for the embattled leader.

Sir Keir will meet Mr Trump in Washington this week, as is French President Emmanuel Macron , fter the US demanded European countries ramp up their defence spending.

Meanwhile, a dozen leaders from Europe and Canada were in Ukraine's capital on Monday to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

The visitors included European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who attended anniversary events in a show of support for Mr Zelensky and Ukraine.
