There are many enticing cities around the world that people dream of moving to, and some are close enough for a quick weekend break from the UK. Now, one of Europe’s prettiest capitals has been named the best place to live in 2025. Copenhagen in Denmark has been crowned the world’s most liveable city by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), taking the top spot from Vienna, which had held the title for three years.

The Danish capital scored highly in stability, education, and infrastructure, and was described as both beautiful and easy to live in. Vienna dropped to joint second after losing points in the stability category, partly due to a bomb threat at a Taylor Swift concert last summer. Barsali Bhattacharyya, EIU deputy industry director, said: “Pressure on stability has led Vienna to lose its position as the most liveable city after a three-year stint.”

The ranking is based on factors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, culture, environment, and public safety.

With global stability under pressure in recent years, cities that offer safety, reliable services, and a good quality of life have risen to the top.

Copenhagen is approximately two hours by plane from the UK, and it is an appealing option for both relocation and short visits.

Regularly ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world, Denmark is known for its relaxed pace of life, liberal attitudes, and world-famous design.

The city is packed with cultural attractions, from the National Museum and art galleries to the palaces of Christiansborg and Amalienborg. It is also home to Tivoli Gardens (the world’s oldest theme park) with rides, shows, and illuminated gardens.

Food is another highlight. Visitors can try traditional Danish smørrebrød, New Nordic cuisine inspired by Michelin-starred restaurants, and world-class coffee and pastries. The city’s craft beer scene is also thriving, with popular spots including BRUS and Nørrebro Bryghus.

Copenhagen’s streets are filled with stylish furniture stores, design boutiques, and cosy cafés that embrace the Danish concept of hygge—a sense of warmth and comfort that locals value, especially during long winters.

The city is also one of the greenest in the world. Cycling is the main mode of transport, and there are plenty of wind farms in the harbour.

Parks such as Kongens Have and the Botanic Garden also provide space to relax, while the clean air and environmentally friendly initiatives make it an attractive place to live.
