Spain extends heatwave warning until Wednesday August 13th

Spain extends heatwave warning until Wednesday August 13th

Spain’s national weather agency has announced that the current heatwave looks likely to linger four days longer than anticipated, lasting at least 11 days and bringing temperatures of up to 43C.

The second heatwave of the summer will continue across much of Spain until at least next Wednesday August 13th, three to four days longer than initially forecast.

Spanish Meteorological Agency Aemet has again extended the heatwave warning, which will last 11 days (unless further extended), as it began on August 3rd.

With this duration, it would be the fourth-longest heatwave on record for the Iberian Peninsula, although still far from the record of 26 consecutive days set in 2015.

The ola de calor (heatwave) warning also applies to the Canary Islands, and only the northern regions along the Cantabrian Sea will be spared.

Spain’s heatwave intensified on Thursday August 7th, with 16 regions (except Asturias) on orange or yellow warnings as temperatures rose to as high as 40C in many parts of the country.

The mercury will exceed 38C in much of the interior of the Iberian Peninsula on Friday 8th, higher still inland in Andalusia and Extremadura.

Fourteen regions have heatwave warnings, including coastal ones. Alicante could get 38C, Mallorca 36C, Madrid 39C, Gran Canaria also 39C.

Over the weekend, temperatures are expected to continue rising slightly upwards in areas of the southwest and northeast, while remaining very hot across the rest of the Iberian Peninsula.

On Monday and Tuesday of next week, temperatures are likely to increase further still in the southwest and northeast up to 41-43C, but drop in the north.

It’s going to continue to be hard to sleep over the next few days, inland and on the coast, as night temperatures will not drop below 23-25C in much of Spain.

Starting on Wednesday August 13th, although the weather forecast uncertainty remains high, the most likely scenario indicates that the stifling weather will cool down slightly.

Rest assured it will still be hot, but hopefully a bit more bearable.
