Trump-Zelensky LIVE: Zelensky cancels press conference 'after Trump calls Putin'

Trump-Zelensky LIVE: Zelensky cancels press conference 'after Trump calls Putin'

Monday's Ukraine peace talks were "good and constructive", Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said in further comments, where he has praised the US' involvement in a security deal.

The Prime Minister's statement reads: “The other material outcome was the agreement that there will now be a bilateral agreement between President Putin and President Zelensky. That was after a phone call between President Trump and President Putin during the course of this afternoon, followed by a trilateral that will add Trump.

“That is a recognition of the principle that on some of these issues, whether it’s territory or the exchange of prisoners, or the very serious issue of the return of children, that is something where Ukraine must be at the table.

“These were the two outcomes that were the most important coming out of today. They’re positive outcomes, there was a real sense of unity. We’ve made real progress today.”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has hailed the historic summit at the White House on Monday as a 'significant breakthrough' in the faltering peace process, stating that the US is now on side with Ukrainian security arrangements.

Speaking to the BBC, the Prime Minister said: “The two-hour talks were a real significant breakthrough when it comes to security guarantees, because we are now going to be working with the US on those security guarantees.”

Similarly to Zelensky, Sir Keir Starmer said there was a "real sense of unity" at the meeting with European leaders and President Trump. He also touted the potential bilateral talks between Russia and Ukraine that emerged after the summit.

“In that is the recognition that in the questions of territory, that is a question for Ukraine, that no decision should be made about Ukraine, without Ukraine,” Starmer said.

As night falls over Washington DC and a day of international diplomacy, Ukraine's President Zelensky has called the summit "a demonstration of genuine unity" between Europe and the US.

In a statement on X, Zelensky described having "long and detailed" discussions with other leaders about the conflict and security guarantees that could ensure a lasting peace.

He also said that the talks had explored the return of the 20,000 children kidnapped by Russia during the conflict, something First Lady Melania Trump felt compelled to write a letter to Putin about over the weekend.

Today, important negotiations took place in Washington. We discussed many issues with President Trump. France's President Emmanuel Macron has been speaking from his country's lavish Washington embassy in the wake of the major international summit, where he pushed back on the idea that handing Ukrainian territory to Putin had been up for discussion.

Macron said that territorial concessions had not been part of the summit, despite President Zelensky's consternation that a map displayed during the talks had incorrectly shown some Ukrainian land as Russian-controlled.

He also told reporters that a truce deal could not contain restrictions on Ukraine's military capabilities, or “any limitation in number or capacity of arms," as it emerges that many of its allies will likely be investing in the country's military build-up in the coming years.

Ukraine's President Zelensky described his "warm" White House reception in a briefing with reporters, during which he provided further detail on his "productive meeting" with Western allies.

Zelensky confirmed that he was "ready" to meet with President Putin for head-to-head talks to end the war, a discussion that German Chancellor Merz separately said could take place within weeks.

However, after seeing the Kremlin repeatedly break international agreements, Zelensky was cautious about any outcome, saying: "If Russia proposed to the president of the United States a bilat, then we will see the result".

The wartime leader also confirmed that Ukraine would be purchasing $90bn of US weapons as part of a wider security agreement. He expects this deal to be confirmed in the next 10 days.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has become the first world leader to speak publicly after Monday's seeming breakthrough summit.

Merz told a press conference that the meeting between the UK, US, Ukraine, and major European powers had "exceeded" expectations.

Separately, the German Chancellor also called for the West to maintain its tough position on the Kremlin and repeated Europe's demands for a ceasefire. He said: "We must put pressure on Russia.

"There must be a ceasefire before further talks."

William Morgan

US President Trump has described his summit with world leaders today as "a very good meeting with distinguished guests," while revealing further details of the deal discussed and the road to peace.

Trump broadly described a deal where security "guarantees" would be provided by European allies, in coordination with the US. He then said that Russia's President Putin would be meeting with Zelensky, before a meeting with all three leaders.

President Trump said: "At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy.

"After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself."

Zelensky is allegedly offering to buy £100bn of US weapons with the aim of encouraging President Trump to back a long-term security guarantee, according to documents seen by the FT.

The massive arms purchase would be financed by Ukraine's European allies, including the UK, according to the report.

£50bn of this total would function as a huge cash injection into Ukraine's advanced drone manufacturing capacity, with US drones also being produced in these factories.

A short while ago, Russia launched several strategic bombers capable of firing cruise and ballistic missiles, according to Ukrainian monitoring channels that track aerial threats.

Multiple Tupolev Tu-95MS aircraft took off from the Olenya airbase in northern Russia.

Ukraine is on alert for a possible large-scale missile strike in the coming hours.

Sources in the Ukrainian delegation at the White House have told the BBC that Presidents Trump and Zelensky are still in the building for more talks, "possibly in a different format."

The sources also said that Zelensky's previously planned interview with Fox News has been cancelled.

Bild reporter Paul Ronzheimer has said the meeting will continue afterwards.

Trump initially said he would call the Russian leader after meeting with the leaders in Washington.

US President Donald Trump and the European leaders are not in talks behind closed doors. While the media were present, here is what each world leader said.

Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky said today's talks have been "constructive" and they discussed "sensitive matters" including security guarantees.

Sir Keir Starmer said security guarantees and a trilateral meeting with Russia, Ukraine and the US would be a "historic" step forward.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed the need for a ceasefire before any meeting with Russia, telling Mr Trump: "Let's work on that and let's try to put pressure on Russia".

French President Emmanuel Macron echoed Merz's calls for a ceasefire and described the talks as a matter of security for all of Europe.

Italy's Giorgia Meloni said one of the most important questions is "how to be sure that it won't happen again, which is the precondition of every kind of peace".

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the allies should push for an end to the targeting of Ukraine's infrastructure.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for the return of abducted Ukrainian children to be a top priority: "As a mother and grandmother, every single child should go back to its family".

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said he "might come from a small country, but we have a long border with Russia". He said he felt there had been more progress made on Ukraine in two weeks than in the past three years.

Aides to Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky have both shared a picture of the leaders speaking alone in front of a map of Ukraine, before they met with their European counterparts earlier this evening.

Dan Scavino, White House deputy chief of staff, shared the image with the caption: "Before heading over to the Multilateral Meeting with European Leaders in the East Room of the White House".

Meanwhile, Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak also shared the photo. He captioned it with emojis of the Ukrainian and US flags and a handshake.

As he closed the open session with European leaders about pursuing an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump offered an uncharacteristic thank-you to the news media.

Known for being a critic of media outlets who criticise him, Mr Trump on Monday said: “The media’s been actually very fair, generally speaking, very fair.”

“I think it’s very important that they’re fair, because this is a very important subject to get it ended,” he said. “So that’s all we ever ask for, is fairness.”

Shortly after, as Trump was dismissing the gathered press, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, seated next to Trump, leaned over to thank him and laughed, saying, “I never want to speak with my press".

Emily Wright

Donald Trump was overheard on a 'hot mic' revealing his true feelings about Vladimir Putin. The incident occurred at the start of a multilateral meeting between Trump, Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky and a group of European leaders, including Keir Starmer.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer just spoke at the table, telling the other leaders that he thinks they can make "real progress" to end the war in Ukraine, in particular on security guarantees.

He said a trilateral meeting is a "sensible next step".

Such a meeting and security guarantees would be a "historic" step forward, he added.

Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, said he would “like to see a ceasefire from the next meeting, which should be a trilateral meeting” with Ukraine, Russia and the US.

Ms Von der Leyen called for working together on “a just and lasting peace,” while Ms Meloni called the gathering “an important day and new phase.”

NATO secretary general Mark Rutte praised Mr Trump for the fact he "broke the deadlock" with President Putin by "starting the dialogue".

Emmanuel Macron, meanwhile, suggested a "quadrilateral" summit after the proposed trilateral meeting. It was not clear if the French President meant a meeting in which France takes part, or if he meant a bloc such as NATO or the EU should be the fourth member.

Martyn Brown

What a difference six months makes, writes Political Editor Martyn Brown.

Ukrainian war hero Volodymyr Zelensky was unceremoniously booted out of the White House earlier this year after a run-in with Donald Trump and his attack dog JD Vance.

Roll forward to yesterday and it was all smiles and handshakes as the two Presidents came face-to-face in the Oval Office once again.

Both Zelensky and Trump were on respectful behaviour as they spoke warmly about each other’s efforts and desire to end the conflict.

The extraordinary meeting came just days after the American President met Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

An end to the war has never been closer and the warmness of Trump and Zelensky’s meeting bodes well.

Zelensky, chastised for wearing a jumper to February’s infamous showdown, even wore a suit this time, albeit a dour black wartime variety.

It was the same outfit he wore to Pope Francis’s funeral - perhaps he came prepared.

There must have been a huge sigh of relief elsewhere in the White House where european leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, were eating a buffet and watching the proceedings on TV.

They had been summoned by Trump to Washington for peace talks.

Sir Keir had apparently interrupted his holiday for the historic gathering in the US capital.

Apart from Trump riffing about golf, attacking Joe Biden as a “horrible, corrupt president” and launching a broadside on US postal voting, europe’s leaders would have been pleased with what they heard as they nibbled on their vol-au-vents.

Later they got the chance to thrash out details of a peace plan with the US President who then said he would phone his mate Putin.

We might not have to wait six months for Trump’s next meeting with Zelensky, and there’s every chance the Russian tyrant will be there too.

He praised Finnish President Stubb’s appearance, saying, “You look better than I’ve ever seen you look.”

Donald Trump has said that Vladimir Putin accepts security guarantees for Ukraine.

Mr Trump said: "I believe that in a very significant step, President Putin agreed that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine.

"I think that the European nations are going to take a lot of the burden.

"We're going to help them, and we're going to make it very secure."

Trump said that one point he'd discuss with the leaders in Washington this evening is "who would do what."

However, Trump said, "We also need to discuss the possible exchanges of territory."

The US leader then repeated his previous point that he is aiming for a trilateral meeting between himself, Zelensky and Putin.

A large map of Ukraine was displayed in the Oval Office, across the Resolute Desk from where Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky were seated.

The eastern portion of the country, shaded in pink, illustrates territory that Russian military forces currently control - approximately 20% of the country.

As of 2024, about 3 to 3.5 million Ukrainians are estimated to be living under occupation since the invasion.

Unlike the last time he was in the Oval Office with Mr Zelensky, Vice President JD Vance made no comments during the public portion of Monday’s meeting.

Next to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Mr Vance sat by as Mr Trump and Mr Zelensky interacted and took questions from reporters.

During February’s tense Oval Office meeting, Mr Vance called Mr Zelensky “disrespectful” for airing disagreements with Trump in public. Zelensky grew defensive and Mr Trump and his vice president blasted him as ungrateful, issuing stark warnings about future American support.

When a journalist asked President Zelensky if he is open to holding an election in Ukraine, he responded yes. However, he said it has to be done in safe circumstances.

"Because during the war, you can't have elections", Zelensky says, adding that a truce might be needed.

This would have to be on land, sea and sky to make it possible to do "democratic" and "legal" elections, he added.

President Trump responded - unclear if being sarcastic or making a joke: "So you say during the war you can't have elections?

"So let me just say three and a half years from now, so you mean if we happen to be in a war with somebody, no more elections?"

Mr Zelensky laughed and Mr Trump smiled as the pair talked over each other, with the Ukrainian leader saying: "you like this idea?", referring to the next US election cycle in which Trump would be ineligible to stand, according to the constitution.

The exchange ended with Mr Zelensky shaking his head.

Presidential elections were scheduled to be held in Ukraine in early 2024. However, because martial law has been in effect since February 24, 2022, in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, no elections were held because Ukrainian law does not allow presidential elections to be held when martial law is in effect. The most recent extension was in July, extended for the 16th time until November.

Asked by a reporter if there would be severe consequences if there is no ceasefire, Trump replied: "I don't think you need a ceasefire".

The US president said "it might be good to have" but he that it may not be necessary for peace.

He added that, "strategically", one country or the other might not want a ceasefire.

This is a shift from Mr Trump's position before his meeting with Putin last week. Mr Trump had said before the summit last Friday that he wanted a ceasefire "rapidly", having threatened Russia with economic sanctions if one was not agreed.

Alice Scarsi

Donald Trump concluded the first, major part of today's crunch talks with Zelensky by saying Vladimir Putin is "waiting" for him to call him and update him on the talks with Zelensky and European leaders.

Zelensky's decision to wear a suit was not ignored by Trump and journalists in the Oval Office.

Seemingly elated, Trump agreed, saying: "I said the same thing".

Answering reporters' questions, Zelensky said he's "ready for trilateral [meeting with Putin]". Earlier this week, it was reported that a positive outcome to this meeting could result in Trump, Putin and Zelensky coming together for in-person talks.

Taking questions from reporters, Mr Trump heard two quotes attributed to Mr Zelensky – “Russia must end this war which it itself started” – and himself – that Mr Zelensky “can end the war with Russia almost immediately if he wants to”.

Asked “which is it”, the US president replied, suggesting a meeting may soon happen: “I think that’s true. We’re going to have a meeting.

“I think if everything works out well today, we’ll have a trilat, and I think there will be a reasonable chance of ending the war when we do that.”

Emily Wright

A reporter in the Oval Office asked Mr Trump about his previous statements that Mr Zelensky can end the war immediately if he wanted to.

Mr Trump says he thinks that's true and that Russia, Ukraine and the US will have a trilateral meeting where there will be a "good chance" of ending the war.

Zelensky signaled that he is open to having a trilateral meeting.

Presidents Trump and Zelensky are now speaking live from the Oval Office.

When asked if this was the end of the road for US support of Ukraine, a deal or no deal, Trump said: "I can never say that. It's never the end of the road.

Mr Trump said the meeting is “very important” and Mr Zelensky thanked Mr Trump for trying to end Russia’s war against his country.

The Ukrainian delegation arrived at the White Huse carrying what appears to be a map, said Sky News US correspondent Mark Stone.

"Although one European diplomat said to me 'don't expect maps to be on tables', maybe that's wrong. Maybe there will literally be a discussion trying to show Donald Trump, in tangible detail, what they are talking about here.

"It's often been described as a territorial swap, a land swap. I think that's a really bad reading of it.

"It's not a land swap, because what Ukraine's being asked to do is hand over land that is Ukrainian and it's not as if the Russians are going to give them some Russian land in return."

It's about whether Ukraine gives Russia land east of the frontline or yet more land, he said.

She noted that "it is Volodymyr Zelensky who personally decides what to wear," before adding that he "is now in a state where every detail matters - his appearance, mood, emotions" and so "chooses the image that best suits his role and moment".

Zelensky’s decision to wear a long-sleeved t-shirt with a Ukrainian military insignia instead of a suit became a point of contention during his tense Oval Office encounter with President Trump earlier this year.

Ahead of Monday afternoon’s meetings at the White House with Trump and European leaders, the Ukrainian leader met with Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, wearing a dark half-sleeve t-shirt, according to a video of the engagement Zelensky posted on X.

Zelensky has set aside the typical uniform of the dark suit and tie since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. He said the choice is to show solidarity with soldiers fighting the Russian army.

But his clothing choice became an issue during the difficult February meeting with Mr Trump.

“He’s all dressed up,” Mr Trump said to reporters as he greeted Zelensky upon his arrival at the White House for the February meeting.

At the beginning of that last Oval Office meeting, a conservative journalist told Zelensky his attire was considered disrespectful by many Americans.

Zelensky responded, in part, by saying, “I will wear a costume when this war is finished".

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, has warned "there are no easy solutions" to the war in Ukraine.

She says: "There are no easy solutions.

"I believe we must explore all possible solutions to ensure peace and security for our nations.

"The work we will do today is important."

She added there are "finally glimmers of hope for dialogue".

Ms Meloni is en route to Washington, like many other European leaders. Since Mr Trump's election, she has carefully positioned herself as the closest mainstream European leader to Mr Trump.

In the last few minutes, Mr Trump has written on Truth Social that it is a "big day" at the White House.

The US leader said the White House has never seen so many European leaders at one time, adding it was a "great honor" for the United States.

He concluded his post, with the cryptic line: "Let's see what the results will be??? (sic)".

US Vice President JD Vance will attend the meeting between Mr Zelensky and Mr Trump today, according to ABC News, citing a source familiar with the plans.

At Mr Trump's explosive clash with Mr Zelensky in the Oval Office in February it was Mr Vance who led the attack before the US president joined in.

Mr Vance accused Ukraine's president of being disrespectful by not wearing a suit in the Oval Office and accused him of campaigning for the Democrats during last year's US presidential election.

Sir Keir Starmer has said allies must "make sure" there is a "fair" and "just" peace in Ukraine as he travelled to Washington.

In a video posted on X, Sir Keir said of the conflict: "Everybody wants it to end, not least the Ukrainians.

"But we've got to get this right. We've got to make sure there is peace, that it is is lasting peace and that it is fair and that it is just.

"That's why I'm travelling to Washington with other European leaders to discuss this face to face with President Trump and President Zelensky, because it's in everyone's interests, it's in the UK's interests that we get this right."

A row has erupted after Hungary's Foreign Minister accused Ukraine of attacking an oil pipeline leading to his country, "cutting off supplies".

In a post on X, Péter Szijjártó said: "This latest strike against our energy security is outrageous and unacceptable!"

He said that Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin had told him that experts were working to restore a transformer station needed to operate the pipeline, but for now they couldn't say when deliveries would resume.

Mr Szijjártó said that for three and a half years Brussels and Kyiv have tried to "drag" Hungary into the war in Ukraine. He added: "These repeated Ukrainian attacks on our energy supply serve that same purpose.

Let me be clear: this is not our war. We have nothing to do with it, and as long as we are in charge, Hungary will stay out of it."

In response, Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's top diplomat, said: "Peter, it is Russia, not Ukraine, who began this war and refuses to end it. Hungary has been told for years that Moscow is an unreliable partner.

"Despite this, Hungary has made every effort to maintain its reliance on Russia. Even after the full-scale war began. You can now send your complaints—and threats—to your friends in Moscow".

Mr Zelensky has described Russia's latest attacks on Ukraine as "demonstrative and cynical".

In a post on X, he said everyone is seeking "dignified peace" but Russia was attacking Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, the Sumy region and Odesa.

This was a demonstrative and cynical Russian strike. They are aware that a meeting is taking place today in Washington that will address the end of the war.

Ahead of crunch talks in Washington Keir Starmer's official spokesman heaps praise on US President Donald Trump.

"We obviously applaud President Trump's efforts to bring about an end to the killing and the lasting peace in Ukraine," he said.

He adds that has shown for 10 years that he "cannot be trusted" and that today's talks were part of an ongoing process to bring peace.

Leaders in Europe view Ukraine’s fight as a bulwark against any Russian ambitions to threaten other countries in eastern Europe and beyond.

French President Emmanuel Macron described Ukraine as an "outpost" of Europe's collective defence if Russia wanted to advance again.

He said yesterday: "If we are weak with Russia today, we’ll be preparing the conflicts of tomorrow and they will impact the Ukrainians and — make no mistake — they can impact us, too".

Ukraine's Air Force has said Russia launched a total of four Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 140 Shahed and decoy drones across Ukraine overnight, of which 88 drones were intercepted or jammed.

In Zaporizhzhia, 17 people were injured in an attack today, according to regional head Ivan Fedorov.

The meeting today will likely be very tough for Mr Zelensky, according to an official close to the ongoing talks.

They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss openly the thinking in Ukraine and between allies.

The official said Mr Zelensky needs to prevent a situation in which he is blamed for blocking peace talks by rejecting Putin’s demand to relinquish all of Ukraine's Donbas region.

Mr Zelensky has said many times he will never accept that demand because it is unconstitutional and could create a launch pad for future Russian attacks.

If confronted with pressure to accept Putin’s demands, Mr Zelensky would likely have to revert to a skill he has demonstrated time and again - diplomatic tact.

Kyiv is seeking a tri-lateral meeting with Mr Zelensky, Mr Trump and Putin to discuss sensitive matters, including territorial issues.

The European leaders expected to join Mr Zelensky in Washington are European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

On the table for discussion are possible NATO-like security guarantees which Ukraine would need for any peace with Russia to be durable.

Putin opposes Ukraine joining NATO outright, yet Trump's team claims the Russian leader is open to allies agreeing to defend Ukraine if it comes under attack.

Britain has said reports Russia could accept security guarantees for Ukraine as part of any peace deal in its war against the country are "encouraging".

Steve Witkoff, Mr Trump's special envoy, told CNN yesterday that such a move had been discussed at the Alaska summit with Putin.

UK health minister Stephen Kinnock welcomed the development as part of any agreement to end the war.

Mr Kinnock told the BBC earlier this morning: "I was very encouraged to see those reports. Of course, as always with the Kremlin, the proof of the pudding is in the eating."

Ukraine's leader reiterated Kyiv's call for security guarantees ahead of his meeting with Mr Trump later today.

Mr Zelensky posted on X: "It’s important that America agrees to work with Europe to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, and therefore for all of Europe".

Last night, however, Mr Trump seemed to put the onus on Mr Zelensky agreeing to concessions. He suggested Ukraine could not regain Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014, setting off an armed conflict that led to its broader 2022 invasion.

Mr Trump wrote on social media: "President Zelensky of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight.

"Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!".

Mr Zelensky appeared to respond with his own post late on Sunday, saying: "We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably".

He went on to say that "peace must be lasting", not as it was after Russia seized Crimea and part of the Donbas in eastern Ukraine eight years ago. The Ukrainian leader said: "Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack".

Ukraine's future could hinge on a crucial meeting at the White House later today between Mr Trump and Mr Zelensky.

Ukraine's leader is being joined by a number of European leaders to put on a united front against Russia.

The European leaders were left out of Mr Trump's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin last Friday.

They will be looking to safeguard Ukraine and the continent from any widening aggression from Russia.

By arriving as a group, the European leaders will hope to avoid any upset, such as when Mr Zelensky’s met Mr Trump in the Oval Office in February.

At that meeting, Mr Trump chastised him for not showing enough gratitude for US military aid.

The meeting is also a test of the United States' relationship with its closest allies after the UK and European Union accepted Mr Trump’s tariff hikes partly because they wanted his support on Ukraine.
