Queen Elizabeth II met Donald Trump on more than one occasion and always seemed happy in his company, despite claims she found him rude. While the controversial US President has been vocal about how much he liked the late monarch, claiming that they had a “really good relationship”, reports on what the late Queen thought of him in return have always varied.

However, in a new edition of his biography about King Charles, royal author Robert Hardman has now set the record straight. By talking to staff members who worked for the late Queen, Hardman has claimed that the two leaders got on well and had “things in common”.

The author said they bonded about matters involving Scotland, where they both had land and family connections.

As reported in The Daily Mail, Hardman wrote: “‘It wasn’t just small talk. They discussed policy matters.

“He was super charming, on his best behaviour throughout,’ says the royal staffer.

“One thing that struck everyone, including the (late) Queen, was the President’s energy: ‘He would bound up and down the stairs.

“When Joe Biden came three years later, we had to put him in the creaky old Edwardian lift.’”

The pair got on so well that it was also reported that their first meeting in 2018, a year before the 2019 state visit, overran by 20 minutes. A Palace source told Hardman: “There was a connection there. No doubt about that.”

Hardman also states in his new book that claims Trump was rude and kept the late Queen waiting, as well as breaking royal protocol by walking in front of her, were untrue.

A member of the late Queen’s staff told the author that rather than being late for his formal greeting on the royal dias, the US president was early. It is also believed that Trump, like all visitors inspecting the Troops, was encouraged to walk first.

The new insight comes just weeks before Donald Trump is set to fly to the UK for his second state visit in September, where he will be hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle with First Lady Melania Trump.
