Outlander: Blood of My Blood: What We Know So Far

Outlander: Blood of My Blood: What We Know So Far
preview for Outlander: Blood of My Blood – teaser trailer (Starz)

Outlander just can’t seem to help itself: The enormously popular Starz series is moving through time again. A prequel based on the show (and series of books by author Diana Gabaldon) is hurtling toward release, with the original series’ executive producer and showrunner Matthew B. Roberts attached as both showrunner and producer for the new spin-off series, called Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

The story centers on the generation preceding fan-favorite Outlander protagonist Jamie Fraser, a Scottish soldier who falls in love with Claire Beauchamp Randall, an inadvertent time-traveler whisked from 1945 to 1743. Their sweeping saga has now spanned numerous books and will continue for a total of eight seasons of Outlander. Blood of My Blood will continue the story (and, Starz hopes, the fan fervor) by tracing the two romances that led to the birth of the Scottish dreamboat himself, as well as the brilliant World War II nurse who’d become his beloved “Sassenach.”

For the prequel, Gabaldon will serve as a consulting producer, an unsurprising move given the author’s previous tease of a prequel novel starring Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, Jamie’s parents.

What will Blood of my Blood be about?

The prequel will follow two love stories, one featuring Jamie’s parents, Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) and Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater), and another centered around Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine). The series will begin across dual timelines, with Brian and Ellen meeting in the Highlands of 18th-century Scotland while Julia and Henry navigate the trials of World War I.

However, as the Blood of my Blood trailer released on July 10 revealed, these separate stories will soon converge. (In Scotland, of course.) Julia and Henry will accidentally travel (separately) back in time to 1714, where they will converge with Clan MacKenzie, Clan Fraser, and Clan Grant, intersecting with Brian and Ellen along the way as each couple fights to stay together—or return to each other.

Who’s in the cast?

Roy, Slater, Irvine, and Corfield will lead the cast as Brian Fraser, Ellen MacKenzie, Henry Beauchamp, and Julia Morison, respectively. Joining them are:

Is there a trailer?

Fans got their first glimpse of Outlander: Blood of My Blood in a teaser released by Starz on January 16.

Then, on July 10, Starz dropped a full-length trailer, which revealed that time travel will play an important role in the prequel drama—just as it did in the original flagship series. Watch the video below.

Will there be a season 2?

Yes. Ahead of the series premiere, Starz announced that Outlander: Blood of my Blood had already received a renewal order for season 2. As of July 2025, the cast and crew are currently in the midst of production on the next installment.
