Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood reveals Jamie Fraser's tough family origins

Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood reveals Jamie Fraser's tough family origins

Outlander: Blood of My Blood star Jamie Roy has opened up about the anticipated Starz historical fantasy drama prequel, revealing a sombre truth regarding the Fraser family.

During an appearance at The Gathering, a Starz event, Roy told Outlander star Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser, about the challenging circumstances faced by the Frasers, reports the Scottish Daily Express.

Roy, stepping into the shoes of the young Brian Fraser (Jamie's father portrayed by Andrew Whipp in Outlander), revealed: "Well, let me tell you about your roots, son. Brian Fraser lives with Lord Simon Lovat Fraser."

In response to Roy's character description, Heughan humorously quipped: "Sorry for that. He's quite a character" alluding to Lord Lovat's (played by Clive Russell in Outlander) notorious reputation for his manipulative ways, disrespect shown towards Jamie, and his misogynistic attitude towards Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe).

Further elaborating, Roy expressed: "Yeah, I know, it's not a great upbringing. We don't have a lot of money and it's not a great life, but Brian's pretty content, I have to say. He's this young lad. He's very happy, kind of go-lucky."

Roy added, highlighting the inner resilience of his character: "Obviously, doesn't have the best circumstances, but he's very much made peace with that when we first meet him."

Outlander hammered home that Lord Lovat ceaselessly scorned Jamie over his father Brian's illegitimacy, being the son of a servant woman.

Tony Curran, cast as the younger Lord Lovat in Blood of My Blood, shed light on the elder Fraser, remarking: "To get where he was, I think he's a very uncompromising individual. If you get in his way, you better get out of his way."

The prequel series reveals more about Jamie Fraser's lineage, with Sara Vickers playing his grandmother and Brian's mother, Davina Porter. Vickers hinted at her character's development, noting: "I think she's become quite canny as a character, surviving this world of the Frasers."

She added: "I definitely think that Brian's good nature comes from Davina."

Despite Brian's harsh childhood and strained relationship with his own father—which deteriorates further when he falls for Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater)—he remains a steadfast and reticent man, traits that are also present in his son Jamie.

Outlander revealed that Lord Lovat tried to stop the union of the young couple, going to extreme lengths like abducting Ellen with an aim to spirit her off to the Monach Isles, thwarting her marriage to Brian.

It was during this time that tensions were particularly high between the Fraser and MacKenzie clans, likely contributing to Lord Lovat's drastic measures.

Lord Lovat's actions significantly worsened the already tense father-son bond, leading to Brian severing ties with his father entirely.

In a past episode, it was revealed that after Ellen's passing, Lord Lovat had the audacity to attempt a visit to Lallybroch only to be decisively ejected by Brian before he could even enter.

Now, fans are set to witness the drama surrounding Lord Lovat and Brian that has been alluded to in Outlander, unfolding on screen.
