The 'best' American Western series 'of all time' now streaming on UK Netflix

American Westerns have entertained audiences for generations. There have been famous shootouts and intense family feuds. But one modern show is now being hailed as the best of them all, and it's now streaming in the UK.

1923, a prequel to Yellowstone, has recently been added to UK Netflix, meaning viewers can now watch 1883, 1923 (season one), and Yellowstone all in one place. The only exception is season two of 1923, which remains exclusive to Paramount+ for now.

Created by Taylor Sheridan, 1923 follows the Dutton family as they battle hardship, violence and change in early 20th century Montana.

It’s set between 1883, which shows the Duttons' journey west, and Yellowstone, the modern-day hit starring Kevin Costner.

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren lead the cast as Jacob and Cara Dutton, a tough couple running the Yellowstone ranch during a time of drought, Prohibition, and the Great Depression.

With no children of their own, they raise the next generation of Duttons while protecting their land from enemies.

Brandon Sklenar stars as Spencer Dutton, a traumatised World War I veteran tracking wild game in Africa.

He soon meets Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer), and their romance becomes one of the show’s standout storylines.

Other key characters include ranch foreman Zane Davis (Brian Geraghty), Jack Dutton (Darren Mann), and Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves), a young Indigenous woman taken from her family and placed in a brutal boarding school.

The first season of 1923 originally aired in 2022 and quickly gained praise for its gritty storytelling and high production values.

It currently holds a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. One reviewer said: “It's hands down the best American Western series of all time. Once you start watching, you can’t stop. Absolutely brilliant.”

Another wrote: “From the very first episode, I was pulled into the brutal and unforgiving world of the Dutton family. The storyline is gripping and powerful.”

Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford both earned award nominations for their roles, and the show has been recognised for its costumes, production design and music.

Many fans say it combines the best of 1883 and Yellowstone into a single, hard-hitting drama.
