Mayo GAA have been called out over their treatment of Kevin McStay after releasing a statement to confirm that they'd relieved the county’s senior football manager of his duties.

The statement was posted on the county board’s official website last night to say that McStay would not be seeing out the fourth year of his term.

The Ballina Stephenites clubman stepped back from his position last month following a health scare he suffered during the team’s training session which left him hospitalised, with Stephen Rochford taking charge of the team on a temporary basis.

Mayo exited the All-Ireland SFC last Sunday week after their late third round group stage loss to Donegal and last night’s short press release from the county board saw McStay and his backroom team officially relieved of their duties.

“A decision was made to relieve Kevin McStay and his management team from their roles with the Mayo Senior Football Team with immediate effect,” part of the press release read.

Mayo GAA has since come under heavy criticism for their treatment of McStay and his management team, with former All-Star defender Lee Keegan and RTE’s Des Cahill among those to hit out at the tone of the statement.

Ah Mayo GAA never cease to amaze the good people. Kevin & his backroom deserved better than that 💩 statement 🤯🤯🤯

Absolutely no class from Mayo GAA. Totally insensitive to Kevin McStay who served the county since he was a teenager.I wonder if #Mayo sponsors stand over the tone and language used in dumping a group, who admittedly failed to win an All-Ireland - like every predecessor since 1951 pic.twitter.com/9Y9y9ZQ15N

Should you ever want to know what an absence of class looks like. 'Relieved of their roles' Sweet Christ. Kevin McStay has given a great chunk of a lifetime as a footballer and manager to Mayo. His health suffered.

And somebody sanctioned this statement. https://t.co/WQC4l3KtMS

Wow, how classy from Mayo. A statement written by clowns. https://t.co/qBTB6Mzisb

I don’t know, maybe I’m old fashioned. The tone. There are ways of saying things. Lacks class if I’m honest.

‘At this meeting a decision was made to relieve Kevin McStay and his management team from their roles with the Mayo Senior Football Team with immediate effect.’

Mayo GAA has learned very little. Kevin McStay has served his county in so many ways. This evenings statement is shocking in tone and those involved showed very little class.
