Aussie Olympic great Cate Campbell reveals she's troubled by the question NOBODY is asking about Marty Sheargold's Matildas outburst

Aussie Olympic great Cate Campbell said the sacking of Triple M host Marty Sheargold in an important moment for women's sport in Australia - but wants to know why more men aren't standing up in opposition to his comments.
Triple M axed Sheargold after he was blasted for comments about the Matildas that have been branded un-Australian, sexist and disgusting.
The actor and comedian, 53, made the remarks on his radio show on Monday as he reacted to the team's 2-1 loss to the USA at the SheBelieves Cup, which came on the heels of their 4-0 loss to Japan to open the tournament.
Sheargold told listeners 'there's something wrong with the Matildas' before comparing the team to 'Year 10 girls' and asking if superstar striker Sam Kerr and her fiancee Kristie Mewis 'play the same position'.
When his co-hosts tried to continue discussing the SheBelieves Cup tournament the team is currently competing in, Sheargold jumped in, exclaiming: 'Oh, she believes in what? It better be men.'
The incident was first highlighted by Aussie hockey player Rosie Malone, who posted it to her social media. From there others shared the clip.

Sheargold, 53, was dumped by Triple M on Wednesday following his shocking comments

Campbell wants to know why 'it is women who are calling out the poor behaviour of men'
Campbell, speaking on Nine's Today show on Thursday, pointed out that it was a woman who had to call out Sheargold.
'Women have been fighting for generations to be seen as equals in sport,' Campbell said.
'Can I just say that Australia had our most successful Olympic Games in Paris 2024... We won 18 gold medals, 13 of them were won by women. Let me just say that again.
'It is a huge proportion of Australia's global sporting success that comes off the back of women. These women are underpaid. They're underrepresented, they're undervalued, they're misrepresented in the media all the time, and yet they are the ones who are often doing the heavy lifting on the world stage.
'We deserve better. We need more recognition. I feel really, really strongly that these comments are unacceptable.
'And my question here is where are the men? There were two other men in that studio while Marty was making those comments... However, it took a woman, it took Rosie Malone, an Olympian in her own right, to call these comments out.
'Why is it women who are calling out the poor behaviour of men and not men stepping up? We don't want to be in this trope. We don't want to be the people who are saying, 'oh, you can't take a joke, stop it. That's not acceptable'.
'That turns people like Marty Sheargold into a martyr for men everywhere, because they're saying women are putting him down.

The comedian's comments were branded 'outrageous' by interim Matildas coach Tom Sermanni (pictured second from left with his team earlier this week)

Sheargold also referenced his genitalia when he told listeners how much he wants to avoid watching the Matildas play (pictured, Mary Fowler)
'We need the men to stand up, to speak out against this, to hold these people accountable.
'This isn't acceptable. This is an acceptable to be talking about female athletes this way. And women more broadly.'
Campbell says Sheargold being axed is a 'watershed moment' for the Australian media.
'The severing of a contract over blatant misogyny, and that is absolutely what it is. Don't cover it with comedy. Comedy has been used to put down women to boy up misogyny for millennia.
'It is gaslighting to women everywhere, and we have had enough.
'And finally, we have had a media organisation take a stand and say, this is not OK. This is not OK. You are demeaning women. You are demeaning women's sports.
'One of our most loved sporting teams in this country, they deserve better. Women deserve better. And female athletes all over Australia deserve better.
One Aussie sportsman who has called out Sheargold is Perth Wildcats champion Greg Hire.
'Marty Sheargold's comments about the Matildas were disgraceful. But what I'm struggling with? The silence. And the laughter.' Hire posted on X.
'This is how it happens. A bloke makes a disrespectful comment, and everyone around him lets it slide.
'It's said behind closed doors, laughed off, tolerated. That can't happen anymore.
'The Matildas deserve better. Women in sport deserve better. Hell, women everywhere deserve better.
'If you wouldn't cop it in public, don't accept it in private. It's not about being 'soft' or 'PC' - it's about respect.
'The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. Time to be better.'
