A group of boys from Bangor made lifelong memories recently as they travelled to London to represent their schools and hometown at the All-Britain Competition (ABC Games), taking part through Ulster GAA’s Cúchulainn Initiative.

The Cúchulainn Initiative is Ulster GAA’s flagship cross-community programme, aimed at uniting young people from diverse backgrounds through Gaelic Games. Representing this initiative, the Bangor Cúchulainns—comprising students from St Columbanus College and Bangor Academy and Sixth Form College—took part in the U15 Boys’ Competition at the Hazelwood Centre, home of the London Irish rugby team.

Although some of the Bangor boys were new to Gaelic Games, they played with pride and determination. Their passion, teamwork and growing skillset were evident as they faced off against more experienced clubs from across Britain.

In the group stages, they earned a hard-fought victory over Tara Gaels, securing their place in the Shield Quarter Finals. There, they battled in a closely contested match against St Joseph’s, with the London side just edging ahead in a game decided by the narrowest of margins.

Off the pitch, the group had the chance to take in the sights of London, visiting iconic landmarks including Westminster, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, and Leicester Square. They capped off the sightseeing with a fun afternoon of team-building at The Crystal Maze Experience.

Speaking at the event, Ulster GAA President Michael Geoghegan praised the programme and those involved: “The Cúchulainn Initiative continues to highlight the power of sport in uniting young people from across our communities, with one of its greatest outcomes being the lasting friendships it helps to build.

The true success of this weekend—and of the initiative as a whole—lies in the memories made and the bonds formed by the boys throughout their involvement in the programme.

“This year, we were proud to have the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs in delivering the project, and I’d like to extend my sincere thanks for their vital contribution in making the trip possible. I also wish to thank O’Neill’s Sportswear who provided all the teamwear for the trip.

Finally, a special thanks goes to the schools for their ongoing commitment, and especially to the teachers who generously gave up the first week of their summer break to accompany the pupils, ensuring they could enjoy such a meaningful and memorable experience.”
