Big Controversy In Fermanagh GAA Over Decisive "Two-Pointers" In League Final

Big Controversy In Fermanagh GAA Over Decisive "Two-Pointers" In League Final

The GAA's new gaelic football rules have been roundly lauded after the first inter-county season under the sweeping changes, but one club final in Fermanagh on Sunday last saw an almighty controversy unfold around a pair of late two-point decisions.

That was clear during the dramatic closing stages of the Fermanagh Senior League Division 1final, contested between Derrygonnelly Harps and Erne Gaels on Sunday last.

Erne Gaels led by four points with 15 minutes remaining before the Harps clawed it back to a level footing thanks to a pair of two-point efforts.

The Declan Bonner-led Gaels side were two points up with three minutes remaining, with the scoreboard reading 0-13 to 0-15 in their favour.

But late drama unfolded when Derrygonnelly's Jarlath Flanagan swung over a point from within the 40-metre arc - only for the score to be awarded as a two-pointer.

That left the game tied approaching the final moments, and with both teams then chasing a winner, it was Derrygonnelly who again stole a march in attack and saw ex-Fermanagh star Stephen McGullion swing over a pointed effort.

That too had left the boot from inside the arc, but again a two-pointer was awarded to leave Derrygonnelly ahead 0-17 to 0-15 and it was that way it remained before the final whistle sounded.

The game was on Fermanagh TV and the footage has been shared widely in the past 24 hours.

While Erne Gaels could have an argument for a replaying of the fixture, the Fermanagh Senior Championship looms just around the corner and may now take precedence.

Nonetheless, fans were dismayed by the contentious calls which ultimately decided the game.

"Take it serious or don’t do it at all. The result can’t stand and you can’t expect people to pay for or support nonsense like this," said one person on Twitter

"Jesus that is cat," came a response from another.
