Liverpool legend casts fresh doubt over Mo Salah's future - after being 'CONVINCED' he would stay just weeks ago

A former Liverpool star has made a U-turn in terms of his thoughts on Mohamed Salah's future at the club.

Salah's future with the Premier League leaders is shrouded with uncertainty with a contract extension yet to be struck between the club and player.

The 32-year-old's deal expires in the summer, meaning he could be leaving for nothing at the end of what has been a remarkable season.

The in-form forward is not alone with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also set to become free agents at the same time as things stand.

And former Reds defender John Arne Riise admits he is no longer sure that Salah will stay at Anfield.

Riise, speaking in association with BetMGM, was asked by GOAL if he is surprised that Liverpool have allowed this situation to materialise and replied: 'I'm not sure how much they have done behind the scenes, maybe trying to negotiate with his agent.

'There are different sides that Mo Salah is saying something and somebody else is saying something else. It's really hard to understand what has really happened.

'It's a shame that kind of thing comes out in the press because it looks like they haven't spoken at all. I can't believe that is the case.

'He is an unbelievable player and now he's in a position where he could just walk away. That's a position that nobody wants their best players to be in.'

Riise, who made 348 appearances for the Merseyside outfit, added: 'If he is to leave Liverpool, I'm quite sure he goes to Saudi. He has been around Europe, been at Chelsea and in Italy, he has done his part in Europe so if he decides to leave Liverpool, I think it's quite clear that he will go to Saudi.

'I'm trying to see where we are at. It's a difficult one. I was quite convinced that he was going to sign a few weeks ago, but it takes so much time that now I'm not sure.'

Salah contributed another goal and an assist as Liverpool beat Man City at the Etihad on Sunday to move almost out of sight at the top of the Premier League.

The match followed second-placed Arsenal's 2-0 defeat to West Ham the day before, leaving an 11 point gap between the two sides with 11 games remaining, though the Gunners have a game in hand.
