Loyal Roscommon servant Donie Smith retires from county football

ROSCOMMON GAA HAVE announced the retirement of Donie Smith from county football.

The two-time Connacht champion in 2017 and 2019 has called it a day 14 seasons on from making his championship debut against Tyrone in 2012. The Boyle man made 133 appearances for his county.

He also won four division 2 league titles and one division 3 league.

A statement from Roscommon paid tribute to his career, saying, ‘Donie was known for his leadership and commitment to the Roscommon jersey. He had the honour of captaining the senior team in 2022 and finished his career with an impressive scoring record of 8 goals and 273 points.

‘Roscommon GAA Chairperson Brian Carroll said: “On behalf of everyone in Roscommon GAA, I want to thank Donie for his dedication and commitment to the Roscommon jersey over the past 13 years.

“He always wore the primrose and blue with great honesty and pride.

“We wish Donie, Laura, and Sadie all the very best for the future and a long, happy, and healthy life.”
