Mayo bounce back with defiant victory over Tyrone in Omagh

Mayo tore up the script in Omagh this evening to record a 2-17 to 1-13 win against Tyrone and keep their All-Ireland senior football championship dreams alive.

After having went down surprisingly to Cavan in their group stage opener a fortnight ago, the Westerners since saw manager Kevin McStay stepping back after being hospitalised following a “medical episode” that occurred during the team’s training session last week.

This evening, they met a Tyrone side which handed high-flying Donegal their first defeat of this year’s championship just seven days ago and built up an eight-point lead on the Red Hands on their home turf by the end of the first-half.

Rory McBrickenden, Ryan O’Donoghue and Paddy Durcan were among the point scorers for the visitors before Darren McHale fired in their first goal in the run up to half-time when they’d go in with a 1-9 to 0-4 advantage.

Malachy O’Rourke’s side battled back in the second-half and got a brilliant goal from Darragh Canavan in the 44th minute to cut their deficit down to three.

Niall Morgan’s free from beyond the arc made it a one-point game, but Mayo still had plenty in the tank as Jack Carney, Durcan and O’Donoghue all sailed over ahead of the latter dispatching a 66th minute penalty past Morgan which put a seal on their rousing victory.
