Waterford have joined Louth, Mayo, Antrim, Roscommon, Sligo and Dublin in looking for a new football manager after Paul Shankey stepped down.

The former Meath footballer has decided not to take up the option of a third year at the helm. Shankey guided the Déise to their first Munster SFC victory in 14 years at Tipperary's expense last year, but they finished bottom of Division 4 in the Allianz League in both of his years in charge, and also failed to progress beyond the group stages of the Tailteann Cup.

In a statement, Waterford GAA thanked Shankey for his contribution.

"We extend our sincere thanks to Paul for his commitment and service to Waterford football," they said.

"His contribution over the past two years has been valued, and we wish him every success in the future."

The board added that the process to appoint a new manager will now begin.
