Summerhill hold off Ratoath to claim ninth Meath SFC title

Summerhill clinched their second Meath senior football championship title in three years with a 0-16 to 0-13 win over Ratoath at Pairc Tailteann this afternoon.

Dave Clare’s men put together a dominant first-half performance in Navan that saw them leading by 0-10 to 0-4 by half-time whistle.

Meath star Eoghan Frayne (0-8) and his brother Conor were in fine shooting form during the opening quarter of an hour for the would-be winners and a Liam Shaw two-pointer along with a Diarmuid McCabe single would have them six points up by the 18th minute.

Bobby O’Brien and Cian O’Brien pulled back scores for Paul Galvin’s side, but a two-pointer from Summerhill skipper Eoghan Frayne would be backed up by a Conor Frayne to ensure that margin stood at six points come the interval.

Kevin Ryan’s score made it a seven-point game after 10 minutes of resumption and another Eoghan Frayne free had the scoreboard reading 0-14 to 0-6 with 44 minutes on the clock.

Gavin McGowan sent over a badly needed two-pointer for Ratoath after they’d fallen nine behind and the scores of Daithi McGowan and Jack Flynn (‘45’) made it a five-point game with as minutes remaining in normal time.

The trailers continued to ride their momentum at that stage, with Jack Flynn booming one over from beyond the arc and Eamonn Wallace landing a point afterwards to make it 0-15 to 0-13 in the 58th minute.

Crucially, the next score went the way of Summerhill via a free from that man Frayne as they held out for the three-point win to collect the Keegan Cup and mark their club’s ninth county SFC success in the process.
