If you're looking for some adventure in your coastal strolls this summer, then there's one beach that's well worth a visit. Saltwick Bay, which is very close to the popular seaside town Whitby in North Yorkshire, has so much natural charm - and you could even spot some fossils there.

It's just a few miles from its busier neighbour, but this hidden cove has so much to discover. From towering cliffs to the relics of a sunken ship, it's the perfect place for history buffs and adventurers alike. And people of all ages will love what it has to offer.

This little-known, rugged bay looks out over the North Sea coast, just a 10-minute drive from the bustling town of Whitby. But what you'll find in Saltwick Bay is a more intimate kind of charm, fewer crowds, and some impressive sights.

For example, it's famous for its reptile fossils, which can be found in the cliff face about one metre above the beach level. Take a walk along the foreshore too, as this is where you're most likely to find ammonites - coiled-shelled cephalopods that are so fascinating to look at.

However, it's worth noting that Saltwick Bay is a site of special scientific interest, so hammering the bedrock is not allowed.

Saltwick Bay is also home to a spooky abandoned shipwreck, right on its shores. The remnants of the Admiral Von Tromp can be found on the shore, but there's a bit of mystery surrounding what actuallt happened to it.

It's thought that it set sail from Scarborough Harbour with a course set for Barnacle Bay back in 1976. But it never reached its destination, instead running aground on rocks at Saltwick Bay.

The mysterious sight is visible at low tide, so make sure you time your visit accordingly if you want to catch a glimpse of it.

Fans of the beach have been full of praise on Tripadvisor, with many leaving glowing five-star reviews. One happy visitor wrote: "A stunning beach, reached by a beautiful cliff top walk from Whitby. Some steep steps down but absolutely worth it. As advised by others we stayed away from the bottom of the cliffs but the bay was wonderful to explore."

Another raved: "A beautiful place, quiet, emerald sea, you almost think your on a Greek Island. A steady walk from Whitby Abbey along the escarpment, approximately 30 minutes, a steep descent and wow, it's idyllic."
