As we gear up for the summer holidays, travellers must take be mindful of where their money is going, as an increasing number of countries are introducing a tourist tax. Countries like Spain, Greece, and Italy are asking holidaymakers to fork out more cash with each visit in a bid to tackle what many destinations are considering 'overtourism'.

Budgeting for tourist tax is all about being in the know before you go, and with help from the experts, you can get ahead on your planning. In order to avoid any overpriced spots, travel expert Michael Corrigan, CEO of Trtl Travel, has compiled the list of inexpensive places to go this summer. They explained: "Keep in mind that some sites might include the tax in the advertised price, while others will add it on when you pay."

Before going away, their advice is to calculate the costs once you know the going rate. Whether it's a percentage or a flat fee, it's best to calculate the total amount of nights you'll be staying.

For example, if you're staying five nights and paying £2, that's £10 and potentially an extra £50 onto your trip when there's a bigger group of you.

Don't forget that tourism tax is something you need to factor into your budget for accommodation, as it could soon rack up a hefty bill.

On top of that, bear in mind that it varies; some sites may have already included it in the price, while others will ask for you to pay upfront upon arrival.

The experts have suggested Austria as a travel spot, thanks to its cheaper costs, along with the Czech Republic.

Coming out on top as the cheapest place to travel with regards to tourist taxes is France, according to Trtl's research. Their taxes can be as low as 55p and go up to, in the most extreme cases, £12.76.

Not falling too far behind was the summer hotspot that is Croatia, with tourism taxes as low as 85p, the equivalent of €1.

In third place was Portugal, where you can pay between 85p and £3.39 for a one-night stay.

Italy made the list with lower costs starting from 85p and going up to £4.24, alongside the ever-popular Spain.

Despite Spain being such a heavy tourist destination, their taxes are low, starting at 85p, giving you more reason to go.

The rest of the countries mentioned are Bulgaria, with a tourist tax starting at £1.30, and Malaysia, with a starting price of £1.70.

Joining it is Greece, with a slightly higher tax from £1.70 per person and up to £12.76.
