Insider Guide to NYC’s Best Cocktail Bar Experiences

New York City has long been known for its nightlife, where food, ambiance, and expertly crafted cocktails come together to provide an entertaining and unique experience.
Vanessa Gordon, a New York native and founder of East End Taste, shares her favorite local hangouts for memorable cocktails, intimate settings, and unforgettable experiences.
From Midtown Manhattan to Greenwich Village, here’s a glimpse of some of her top picks.
You mention Dante as one of your top spots. What keeps you coming back to this iconic café in Greenwich Village?
An experience at Dante effortlessly blends old-world charm with a vibrant modern Italian cocktail culture. Located in Greenwich Village, this legendary café and bar is a must-visit for both tourists and locals, whether for a leisurely aperitivo, a perfectly crafted cocktail, or a lively late-night gathering.
The historic space, dating back to 1915 evokes the warmth of a classic European café with a touch of New York City energy. I first discovered Dante and tried their famous Negroni variations when they came to the Hamptons during the summer of 2020 to curate an exclusive ‘APERItiki’ cocktail menu at Moby’s in the Hamptons.
My go-to order at Dante is their Chocolate Negroni with ingredients like botanist gin, campari, and tempus fugit creme de cacao (a liqueur made with Venezuelan cacao and Mexican vanilla).
Vanessa, Ayza Wine & Chocolate Bar sounds like an incredible spot. What makes this place stand out to you?
Ayza Wine & Chocolate Bar is such a charming and intimate place. Located in the heart of Midtown, it feels like a cozy escape from the hustle of the city.
What I love most is the combination of artisanal chocolate and perfectly paired wines or cocktails. Their Chocolate Manhattan is a personal favorite—it’s made with chocolate bourbon, sweet and dry vermouth, and bitters.
I appreciate that they prepare the cocktail right in front of you; it’s such a lovely experience. Plus, it pairs perfectly with their Angry Chicken Lollipops.
It’s a great destination for a date night or just a relaxing evening.
Bemelmans Bar is known for its elegance and history. What do you enjoy most about this timeless spot?
Bemelmans Bar is the epitome of New York sophistication, and I adore it for its timeless elegance.
Located inside The Carlyle Hotel, the space has a refined, intimate vibe, and the atmosphere is enhanced by live jazz, classic cocktails, and murals by Ludwig Bemelmans, the illustrator of the Madeline series.
My cocktail of choice here is The Whistling Butterfly. It’s made with Patron El Alto Tequila Reposado, Siete Misterios Doba-Yej Mezcal, and ginger candy. It’s not only delicious but also perfectly reflects the glamour of the space.
When it comes to hospitality, the Rosewood Hotel Group consistently offers an experience that is unparalleled.
Overstory: Elevated Cocktails with a ViewWith its location, Overstory offers a unique vantage point. Why do you recommend this place for a cocktail experience?
Overstory is an absolute gem for those who appreciate both great drinks and stunning views. Situated atop the 70 Pine Street building, it offers 360-degree views of the city — a perfect backdrop for a sophisticated evening.
The ambiance is art deco, ideal for a pre-dinner aperitif. I love their The Last Frontier cocktail, which blends gin, sherry, and mandarin for a refreshing and smooth experience. If you’re in the mood for something comforting, the Chai Spot with bourbon, cognac, and Assam is perfect.
It’s a great spot to unwind with friends or for a special night out.
Loulou sounds like a fun, whimsical spot. What makes it unique in your eyes?
I first came across LouLou during their pop-up at The Maidstone Hotel in the Hamptons, and I was hooked.
Their cocktails are playful and unique, reminding me of a carefree afternoon in a French garden. The Down the Rabbit Hole cocktail with Upstate Vodka and Aperol is a standout.
For a more adventurous experience, you can visit Adélaïde’s Salon, a hidden speakeasy with live jazz, burlesque performances, and table service. The entrance is through a vintage Coca-Cola machine, which adds to the intrigue.
It’s an amazing escape for anyone seeking something a little different in New York’s nightlife scene.
Tell us about Nubeluz — it seems like a place that combines luxury and incredible views.
Nubeluz is one of those places that’s effortlessly glamorous. Located at The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad, it boasts 270-degree views of the city.
The setting is sleek and modern, making it the perfect place for a sophisticated night out.
Their cocktail menu reflects the city’s diverse character, inspired by different neighborhoods. My favorite drink there is L’Appel Du Vide, which is made with Grey Goose Vodka, lemongrass, vanilla, coconut, cava, and lemon. It’s refreshing and unique.
With its wraparound terrace, it’s the perfect spot for late spring and summer nights.
Finally, what draws you to The Seville for a nightcap?
The Seville has such a vibrant, sexy energy. Located inside The James Hotel Nomad, it’s the perfect place to cap off a dinner at their sister restaurant, Scarpetta, which is known for its refined pasta dishes.
The Seville offers live music, craft cocktails, and a lively vibe. On Cuban nights, I love the Pineapple Smoky Daiquiri, which features lime and saffron honey. It’s a drink that transports you to an island paradise.
Another standout is the Banana Express, which combines Don Julio Alma Miel and espresso for a unique, dessert-like experience.
The Seville really brings together great drinks and entertainment in a lively atmosphere.
Vanessa Gordon’s favorite spots around the city blend sophistication, playfulness, and charm. Whether you’re looking for a quiet cocktail in an intimate setting or a lively venue with jaw-dropping views, these NYC cocktail bars offer something for every mood and occasion.
