Overlooked European town dubbed as a 'seaside paradise' has £60 return flights from UK

With thousands of Brits flocking to European hotspots for the summer holidays, some may be looking to escape the crowds by looking for the hidden gems. Tucked away on a lesser-known island in southern Europe, there is a sun-drenched coastal haven that rivals its more famous neighbours – yet few British travellers have heard of it.
With return flights from the UK starting at just £60, this under-the-radar gem has soft golden beaches, mediaeval charm, and a slower pace of life that’s increasingly hard to find in the Adriatic Sea. It’s a destination that blends cultural richness with the soothing calm of coastal living – perfect for a summer escape without the crowds. But it’s not in Spain, Italy or Greece. With its sandy coastline, Rab is an island that stands apart from top Croatian hotspots like nearby Zadar, which is also where the nearest airport is located.
As Joanne Lynn, Head of European Product at Riviera Travel, explained, visitors can “ditch the busy urban life for a seaside paradise by visiting Rab.”
She added: “Unlike many Croatian islands known for their rocky shores, Rab is a haven for beach lovers, boasting some of the best sandy beaches in the country.”
Paradise Beach in Lopar is the island’s crown jewel, with golden sand and shallow, warm waters that make it ideal for families.
It is backed by pine trees and lapped by the Adriatic waves – a rare but comfortable beach experience in a country where pebbles usually rule.
Rab town has a rich historical background. In fact, its skyline is defined by four iconic bell towers, the oldest one of which dates back to 1181.
Joanne noted: “Rab Town, with its four bell towers rising above terracotta rooftops, is a delight to explore.
“The medieval streets are home to charming boutiques, cafes, and historical sites, such as the Romanesque Cathedral of St. Mary.”
Those craving a deeper connection with history should time their visit for July, when the Rab Medieval Festival brings the past to life.
“Discover Rab’s rich history by visiting in July, when knights, archers, and artisans showcase the island’s fascinating past in the Rab Medieval Festival,” said Joanne.
Rabska Fjera is based on the tradition of knights’ games from the 14th century, and is held every year in the town of Rab from 25 to 27 July.
