Woman visits Morocco on her own and issues brutally honest thoughts

Solo travel offers the freedom to explore the world on your own terms, allowing you to tailor your itinerary to your personal preferences without considering the desires of fellow travellers. Yet, the most significant concern when travelling solo is personal safety.
For this reason, it's crucial to conduct thorough research before setting off on a solo adventure. Certain destinations are more conducive to solo travel than others – and one Spanish traveller named Clara shared her experience of navigating Morocco alone.
Morocco attracts visitors with its stunning landscapes, bustling markets, rich culture, and delectable food. But how safe did Clara feel?
In a revealing TikTok video, Clara discouraged solo female travel in Morocco. Although she never felt threatened by locals, she was exasperated by the constant street approaches and requests for money.
She expressed: "Okay, I'll tell you what I think about travelling alone in Marrakech. If you are a woman, let's see... This place is not dangerous, but they are very persistent; annoying, really. Why? They're constantly trying to sell you something or want to help you at every moment. Honestly, I don't think it's a country to go alone, and that's it."
Clara also mentioned encounters with other tourists who had experienced being followed while sightseeing. Therefore, vigilance is key for those venturing to Morocco by themselves.
Every traveller's experience is unique – but while you might have better fortune than Clara in Morocco, the UK government does advise caution. The gov.uk website highlights crime as a concern and offers specific advice for women.
The government website states: "There can be occasional violent crime in Morocco. Criminals have used knives against tourists in street attacks, thefts and burglaries in major cities and along beaches. To reduce your risk:
- "avoid quiet areas, particularly after dark
- "do not carry large amounts of money or valuables
"Petty crime is common in tourist areas, especially in historical districts (medina quarters) and on beaches. Crimes include:
- "pickpocketing
- "bag-snatching
- "drive-by motorcycle theft of visible jewellery and handbags.
"Be cautious when asking for directions and using ATMs – aggressive begging is common."
Furthermore, it cautions female travellers: "Women may receive unwanted attention in Morocco, especially when travelling alone. Consider wearing loose-fitting clothing which cover the arms, legs and chest."

Regardless of your destination, it's crucial to research local laws, customs, and restrictions thoroughly. Sometimes, it's advisable to travel in groups or arrange tours with trusted companies or guides.
Solo travel can be incredibly rewarding, but always prioritise safety!
