Amsterdam’s large-scale ring road celebration on 21 June, marking the city’s 750th anniversary, will be a ticket-only event, the city council confirmed this week.

A total of 280,000 free tickets will be available from 21 May — enough for around a quarter of the city’s wider population, and far short of the 680,000 people expected to want to attend.

The event will see sections of the A10 ring road closed to traffic for the day to host 25 separate activities, including dance parties, a 7.5-kilometre race, a pop-up forest, museum exhibitions and even weddings — with 20 couples given the chance to tie the knot.

The festival has been divided into three zones: west, south and east. Tickets will not be required for the eastern zone, where the road race is to be held. Attendees can book up to six tickets for the morning session, and up to four for the afternoon and evening programmes.

They’ll also have to decide in advance which slip road onto the motorway they want to use to access the party.
