Moles are cute, but they quickly cause chaos in the garden. Some mole control products are strictly prohibited.

Moles burrow through the soil, leaving mounds on the lawn , and drive many garden owners crazy. But anyone who thinks they can get rid of them with poison or traps is seriously mistaken and risks hefty fines. The animal is a protected species in Germany .

According to the Federal Species Protection Ordinance, the European mole is a "specially protected species." This means that it is forbidden to capture, injure, or even kill it. Even the destruction of its habitat can be punished. Even relocation is prohibited.

A violation of the Animal Welfare Act or the Federal Nature Conservation Act can result in a fine of up to 65,000 euros, depending on the federal state .

Only in exceptional cases does the nature conservation authority grant a special permit for mole control – for example, if the safety of a dike is endangered by a mole's tunnel system.

Despite the annoyance of the mounds, many common methods should not be used. These include:

  • Poison baits and chemical agents
  • Drown or dig up
  • Live or dead traps
  • Natural gas or engine exhaust

Pouring liquids such as butyric acid or turpentine is also not a good solution. Such substances harm both humans and animals and can also pollute groundwater.

Those who want to get rid of moles legally can resort to home remedies and animal-friendly methods. Buttermilk or garlic broth , which is poured into the mole tunnels, is suitable. Moles find the smell unpleasant. Plant manure made from elderflower, nettle, or wormwood is also suitable.

Thuja branches or walnut leaves can also be placed in the mound openings. Even the heads of dead herrings will repel the insectivores. Safe ultrasound devices, wind chimes, or bottles placed in the ground that create vibrations also serve their purpose. Alternatively, regular lawn care and frequent digging are effective in making the habitat unattractive.

If you want something a little more expensive, a special mole net prevents the animals from digging in the garden by laying it under the lawn.

Important : The means used must neither injure the animal nor destroy its habitat.

As annoying as the mounds may seem, the mole fulfills an important function in the garden. It eats snails , larvae, and other vermin. If you let it do its thing, you'll have fewer problems with pests in your vegetable patch in the long run.

In addition, by digging up the soil, the mole loosens it and ensures good aeration. The fine soil is ideal for growing plants. A well-maintained garden with a tolerated mole can therefore actually benefit from its presence.
