“Lash” at the Deutsche Oper: Eyelashes between life and death

“Lash” at the Deutsche Oper: Eyelashes between life and death

The Deutsche Oper is performing a piece without a plot, text, or characters. Rebecca Saunders's "Lash" is a magnificent work of contemporary musical theater.

Dietmar Schwarz, the outgoing artistic director of the Deutsche Oper , programmed Helmut Lachenmann's "The Little Match Girl" as the first work of his tenure: a striking commitment to contemporary musical theater that was no empty announcement. Each season saw the performance of an important work from recent years or the premiere of a new one, including successful works such as Detlev Glanert's "Oceane" and Aribert Reimann's "L'Invisible" as well as unsuccessful ones such as Chaya Czernowin's "Heart Chamber" and Giorgio Batistelli's "Teorema." The final premiere of Schwarz's tenure is both a testament to the productive and inspiring nature of the work and a triumph of music-generated theater: "Lash" by the Berlin-based composer Rebecca Saunders.
