After the break-in: Louvre brings jewels into a high-security vault with the help of police

The Louvre isn't resting. After Sunday's break-in of the century, in which eight crown jewels worth around €88 million were stolen in broad daylight, the French capital is apparently worried about further thefts.

Several media outlets reported that the museum is now moving parts of its precious jewelry collection to a heavily secured vault. The move was carried out under police protection and was expressly intended to protect other valuable objects.

The selected pieces of jewelry were brought to the underground vaults of the French central bank (Banque de France). The vault is located approximately 26 meters below ground and houses, among other things, approximately 90 percent of France's gold reserves. Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks, estimated at over 600 million euros, have been stored in the same vaults for several years.

Exactly which exhibits were transported into the vault is not yet fully known. However, it is suspected that not only the stolen crown jewels from the Galerie d'Apollon, but also other historical jewelry pieces may have been affected.

This extraordinary step underscores how seriously the museum is taking recent security concerns. The theft sparked a broad debate about security measures at the Louvre, and experts are now calling for a fundamental review of security policies, especially for objects of exceptional historical value.

The museum has now reopened. The perpetrators used a German crane to break into the world's most famous museum. A company from North Rhine-Westphalia had sold a furniture lift to Paris five years ago. The Louvre thieves stole it from the current landlord and used it to pull off the robbery .

Authorities continue to intensively investigate the four masked perpetrators who stole the jewels from the Louvre in just seven minutes. (with dpa)
