Sophia and Noah remain the most popular first names in 2024

Sophia and Noah remain the most popular first names in 2024
May 8, 2025

The Society for the German Language has published its new name charts. The top ten names for boys and girls remain unchanged. One name is new, and another is out.

Sophia and Noah remained the most popular baby names in Germany in 2024, according to the current rankings of the Society for German Language (GfdS). Noah, in particular, has consistently held the top spot for boys' names since 2019.

Short, sonorous names are particularly in demand

GfdS Managing Director Andrea Ewels believes the reason for the continued popularity of these names lies primarily in their sound: "Parents choose names that are perceived as beautiful and pleasant," she said in Wiesbaden. Furthermore, the favorites are usually short, easy to pronounce, and internationally understandable. They sound familiar, modern, and at the same time timeless—characteristics that appeal to many parents.

Compared to last year, the race for first place among girls' names was less close this time. In 2023, Sophia/Sofia and Emilia were separated by only four votes. This time, Sophia has significantly increased the gap. Emma, Mia, and Lina follow in the next places.

Slight movement in the top ten of boys

In the boys' category, Mat(h)eo remains in second place, closely followed by Leon. Luca/Luka and Paul occupy the other positions. Theo is new to the top ten, entering seventh place. Last year's climber Liam, on the other hand, falls back to 14th place.

The GfdS has published the hit list of the most popular first names since 1977. It is based on information from around 750 registry offices with approximately 900,000 individual names submitted – this corresponds to over 90 percent of the first names given in Germany.
