Iran's foreign minister threatens consequences after US attack

TEHRAN (dpa-AFX) - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi has threatened consequences following the US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. "This morning's events are outrageous and will have lasting consequences," the minister wrote on the X platform.

Aragchi further stated that Iran reserves all options to protect its sovereignty, its interests and its people, in accordance with the UN Charter and the right to legitimate self-defense.

The United States intervened in the war against Iran on the side of Israel on Sunday night and, according to US President Donald Trump, attacked nuclear facilities. Among them was the well-fortified underground uranium enrichment site at Fordo.

Aragchi had recently been negotiating with the US on the nuclear program, mediated by the Gulf state of Oman. Recently, the talks stalled over the key issue of uranium enrichment. The US demanded a complete abandonment, while the Iranian leadership defined this as a red line.

The minister accused the US of committing a serious violation of the UN Charter, international law and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty with the attack.

The Iranian mission to the United Nations called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in light of the US attack, state broadcaster reported./arb/DP/zb
