Semiconductor industry: How Dresden attracts an entire industry

Reading time: 5 min.
|Where other locations have repeatedly failed recently, Dresden is succeeding: Companies from the semiconductor industry are actually investing here. Why is that?
The first walls and supports are already in place, and a ballet of construction cranes is forming around them. Two enormous mounds of earth, piled up from excavated material, line the construction site of the semiconductor manufacturer ESMC here in northern Dresden. Last August saw the groundbreaking ceremony for the new factory, which still requires "some imagination," as managing director Christian Koitzsch admits: Where dust is currently flying through the air, production of chips for the automotive industry is scheduled to begin in two years under the highest hygiene standards, subsidized to the tune of five billion euros by the federal government. "We're well on schedule," says Koitzsch, while construction workers toil behind him.
