US attack on Iran: Fear until the stock markets open

The US attack on Iran has the potential to cause financial markets to collapse on Monday. Is the global economy at stake? Or will the stock markets simply shrug off the escalation?

It is not known why US President Donald Trump chose a Saturday for his country's bombing raids on Iran. But it could be that he at least wanted to restore calm on a front from which he has already had to endure repeated attacks: the financial markets. On Sundays, no oil, stocks or bonds are traded anywhere in the world, giving investors at least a day to digest the news . This may protect them from overly nervous reactions - like those seen at the beginning of April, when stock and bond prices crashed because Trump announced extremely high punitive tariffs for almost every country in the world - and which he then had to withdraw. Observers are now all the more anxious about Monday morning, when stock trading will begin again, first in Asia and later in Europe and the USA.
