My day as a VC partner: Start at 4 a.m. with a green smoothie, finish at the wine bar
This article is based on a conversation with Kate McAndrew, a 38-year-old co-founder and partner at the San Francisco-based venture capital firm Baukunst. It has been edited for length and clarity.
I got my first opportunity in venture capital in 2012. As soon as I joined, I had the feeling: This is a good fit – like two puzzle pieces that complement each other perfectly.
In 2022, I co-founded Baukunst – a VC fund where I serve as a general partner alongside three partners. We invest in technology-driven startups in the pre-seed stage, particularly where technology and design intersect in exciting ways. Our seed fund comprises $100 million (€87 million).
No two days are alike – and yet the week follows a certain rhythm. Mondays feel like Mondays, Tuesdays like Tuesdays – but what happens is always new.
A key reason for this is that I have 50/50 custody of my son. My entire schedule is centered around him.
Together with my assistant, I plan my calendar quarterly. I consistently follow my natural rhythms and what has worked for me. I make decisions consciously – and stand by them. This sounds obvious, but it's not for everyone. But especially if you have the privilege of organizing your own time, you should take advantage of it.
