Americans call the amenities associated with a particular professional position “perks.” We would probably call them “extras.” The office of the President of the United States of America offers comparatively modest compensation, but a host of perks. There’s the official car, fully armored and nicknamed “The Beast.” There’s the official plane with the lovely name “Air Force One.” There’s the official residence, 132 rooms, close to the city center at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. There are small but pleasant touches, like the discreet button on the President’s desk in the Oval Office that instructs a butler to bring a fresh Diet Coke immediately.
