What RTL Germany CEO Stephan Schmitter announced on Friday morning could almost be described as a coup: The Cologne-based broadcasting group intends to acquire the pay-TV channel Sky , and at a comparatively low price. This brings parent company Bertelsmann 's dream of creating a so-called champion in the German television market—a provider of serious stature—a significant step closer to becoming reality. If the takeover goes ahead as planned, the balance of power in the German television and streaming market will be completely reshuffled.
