Anyone who wants to get a glimpse of what Los Angeles would look like without undocumented immigrants should head to MacArthur Park in the city center these days. It's spooky, apocalyptic—as if the people who usually hang out here have dropped everything and declared this park, with Swan Lake at its center, a deserted place. The hot dog roasters, the ice cream and fruit vendors, the sellers of everything from baby food to Messi jerseys: all gone; either arrested by ICE officials or, out of fear, preferring to stay away from this place that was once known as the "Champs-Élysées of Los Angeles," and where, until a few days ago, you could have anything—including, let's not deny it: fake IDs, Social Security cards, which you need for employment in this country, and drugs of all kinds.
