Wuppertal-Elberfeld. Like many cities in the region, the Bergisches Land metropolis is struggling with enormous problems: high levels of debt, dilapidated schools, and dilapidated roads. On the other hand, Wuppertal has enormous potential – as the center of the Bergisches Land region, as a university town, and as a place with a rich industrial history.
The area around Laurentiusplatz is bustling. It's the beginning of August, and the cafés, bars, and bistros in this district, known to Wuppertal residents and visitors alike as a nightlife and entertainment district, are bustling. The area is called Luisenviertel, also known as Wuppertal's old town, due to the density of Wilhelminian-era buildings with stucco-decorated facades, which were largely spared from the air raids of World War II. The ice cream parlor Mandoliti is also bustling.
