31,000 rainbow families in Germany
As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) announced on Tuesday following initial results of the 2024 microcensus, 50,000 children lived in the so-called "rainbow families."
In total, there were almost 8.4 million families with minor children in Germany in 2024, just over one in every 200 of which was a "rainbow family." A good 70 percent of the parents in these families were two women (22,000), and just under 30 percent were male couples (9,000).
Of all 208,000 same-sex couples, 15 percent lived together as a "rainbow family" with children under 18 years of age. If one uses an expanded definition of family that also includes couples with adult children, there are 38,000 "rainbow families" living in Germany with 62,000 minor or adult children.
