Defence Committee head calls for general military service

"Of the approximately 700,000 school leavers, less than ten percent currently opt for voluntary service and only 10,000 for service in the Bundeswehr. Those who want to live their lives in freedom and prosperity cannot rely solely on the commitment of others," Röwekamp told the "Rheinische Post." "That's why I'm calling for the introduction of a general military service obligation—for men and women alike. This obligation should not only serve the military, but can also be fulfilled in social or civil society areas," said Röwekamp.

"In this way, we are not only strengthening our defense capabilities, but also social cohesion," said the CDU politician. A mandatory year of service is also an expression of a new understanding of the state and a commitment to solidarity and commitment, said Röwekamp.
