SZ podcast “To the Point”: Who threatens our democracy: Analysis of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution report

This week, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) presented the latest report from the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The domestic intelligence agency's assessment is very clear: Democracy in Germany is under increasing pressure, particularly from a growing number of right-wing extremists. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the number of right-wing extremists has risen significantly. According to the report, 10,000 more people than last year can be classified as belonging to the right-wing extremist spectrum: a total of more than 55,000. Of these, more than 15,000 are "violence-oriented," according to the agency.
An increase was also observed in other extreme areas: According to the report, approximately 38,000 people now belong to left-wing extremism (previous year: 37,000). The threat from Islamism also remains at a high level, at 28,300 people, according to the report. This year's report by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution places a special focus on the threat posed by espionage activities, especially the "hybrid war" that Russia is waging in Germany.
SZ editor Markus Balser has taken a closer look at the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution's report. He says the report shows once again that the greatest threat to the basic democratic order comes from the right-wing extremist scene. To shrink the extreme fringes, he recommends one thing above all: reducing polarization in social debates.
Also in this episode: Journalist Jürgen Schmieder answers the question in LA about how the American population actually assesses Trump's escalating actions there.
The editorial deadline for this Saturday edition of “Auf den Punkt” was, exceptionally, 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 12.
