In recent days, Bayer 04 and Liverpool FC have been growing closer , and Florian Wirtz 's transfer is in the final stages. Now, however, conflicting reports have emerged regarding the status of the negotiations.
Fabrizio Romano and Sky reported late Tuesday evening that both clubs had made a breakthrough in their negotiations on the transfer fee for the German international and reached an agreement in principle.
However, The Athletic followed up last night with a report stating that both clubs were still in the final stages of negotiations and looking for an agreement.
Either way, the Premier League and the Bundesliga are facing the biggest player transfer in their respective histories.
The transfer package, consisting of a fixed fee and bonus payments, is reportedly worth up to €150 million for the 22-year-old. This deal will surpass both the 2017 transfer of Ousmane Dembelé from Borussia Dortmund to FC Barcelona (for a fixed fee of €105 million) as the most expensive transfer in the Bundesliga, and the transfer of Enzo Fernandez five years later from Benfica Lisbon to FC Chelsea (for €121 million) as the most expensive purchase in the Premier League.
Wirtz matured into a world-class player at BayerWirtz, whose medical is still pending, moved from 1. FC Köln to the Werkself at the beginning of 2020, where he matured into a double-winner and highly sought-after world-class player. Leverkusen was keen to extend his contract, FC Bayern Munich were desperate to sign him, and Manchester City expressed interest – but ultimately, after careful consideration, the attacking player chose Liverpool FC and coach Arne Slot. And the reigning English champions are now investing more than ever before.
Money that German runners-up Leverkusen can and must use to push ahead with the squad overhaul this summer. In addition to the exceptional talent Wirtz, defensive leader Jonathan Tah (to FC Bayern) and winger Jeremie Frimpong (also to Liverpool FC) have already departed.
