Julian Brandt's remarks about the reason for his left wrist splint sounded succinct in the mixed zone after the 1-0 victory over Ulsan HD (South Korea). He said he had broken his scaphoid bone in the tenth minute of the first Club World Cup group match against Fluminense (0-0 draw) . "I'll have to wear this thing for a while," he explained, referring to the black splint. "Unfortunately, tape isn't enough. But maybe I'll get lucky and avoid surgery."
"The splint pinches the thumb"Initial examinations have already taken place in recent days, confirming Brandt's fitness to play against Mamelodi Sundowns (4-3) and Ulsan. However, the subsequent treatment has not yet been finalized. Only after further examination in the USA will a decision be made as to whether Brandt will require surgery or whether the injury can be treated conservatively. This would be the case if the bone has not dislocated.

"The splint clamps his thumb to prevent damage. It's a bit of a hindrance, but he'll probably have to play with the splint for three months," said BVB coach Niko Kovac, who withdrew Brandt from the starting lineup against Ulsan HD and only substituted him in the closing stages. However, if surgery is necessary, the plan could be postponed again.
