First playoff game, first goal, first win: Football icon Thomas Müller and the Vancouver Whitecaps have plenty of reasons to be in a good mood after their first matchup against FC Dallas. Müller's post-match reaction was, as usual, unconventional.
Thomas Müller and the Vancouver Whitecaps made a statement at the start of their title chase in the North American professional league MLS. The 36-year-old and the Whitecaps won their first playoff match against FC Dallas by a decisive 3-0 (1-0). Vancouver still needs a win in the best-of-three series; the second matchup takes place on Sunday (2:30 a.m.) in Dallas.
Müller once again played a decisive role in the Canadian team's victory with his penalty in the 60th minute, making it 2-0. For the FC Bayern icon, it was his ninth goal for the Whitecaps in nine competitive matches across all competitions. Accordingly, Müller was acclaimed by the fans when he was substituted in the 86th minute. Daniel Rios (43') had given the hosts the lead at BC Place, and Kenji Cabrera (83') sealed the final score.
"We controlled the game from the start and distributed the ball well. But that was just one win; we need a second," Müller said on Apple TV, adding with his usual confidence: "We're ready for more. I want to have fun with the guys." He's been doing just that since moving from Munich to Canada in the summer. "Yes, it's going well," the 2014 World Cup winner emphasized before the match against Dallas. He's "in significantly more attacking situations here than in the Bundesliga. There's a bit more space here."
Asked what makes the Whitecaps special, he replied in typical Müller fashion: "If I weren't a player, but an expert, I'd say this team has a good sense of togetherness. But as a player, I don't reveal any secrets."
