The final matchday of the Premier League season promises to be a thrilling affair: While Liverpool, as champions, and Arsenal, as runners-up, have already secured their place in the Champions League, five other teams are battling for the remaining three spots in the competition. The starting position is extremely tight – and the final matchday is a real challenge.

Manchester City is in the best position, two points ahead and with the clear best goal difference. They are followed by a trio of teams with 66 points – Newcastle, Chelsea, and Aston Villa. Nottingham Forest is just behind with 65 points and a slightly weaker goal difference.

3. Manchester City 68 points (+26)

4. Newcastle United 66 points (+22)

5. Chelsea FC 66 points (+20)

6. Aston Villa 66 points (+9)

7. Nottingham Forest 65 points (+13)

  • Fulham – Manchester City
  • Newcastle – Everton
  • Aston Villa-Manchester United
  • Nottingham Forest – Chelsea

If the teams are tied on points, goal difference counts first, followed by the number of goals scored. If the tie remains tied, a playoff match takes place on neutral ground—a situation that has never occurred in the Premier League before.

Manchester City safely qualifies for the Champions League…

  • … in a win against Fulham.
  • … in a draw against Fulham – due to the significantly better goal difference compared to Villa.
  • … even if we lose – as long as not all our pursuers win at the same time.

Newcastle United is definitely qualified…

  • … in a win against Everton.
  • … in the event of a draw against Everton if Villa fails to beat Manchester United.
  • …in the event of a defeat, if Villa also loses and Chelsea loses by a larger margin than Newcastle.

Chelsea FC is safely in the Champions League…

  • … with a win against Nottingham Forest.
  • …in a draw if Villa fails to beat Man United.
  • …in a draw if Newcastle loses.
  • …even if they lose – if Villa loses and Newcastle loses by four goals more than Chelsea.

Aston Villa makes it to the Champions League…

  • … if they win against Man United and one of the following three conditions occurs:– City loses– Newcastle does not win

    – Chelsea doesn’t win

  • …in a draw, if Newcastle loses and Chelsea don't win.

Nottingham Forest creates a surprise…

  • … if we beat Chelsea and either Newcastle or Villa don't win.
