Racism allegation at Club World Cup: FIFA investigates Rüdiger's opponents

Charlotte. Following allegations of racism by national soccer player Antonio Rüdiger against his opponent at the Club World Cup in the USA, FIFA has launched an investigation. As the world governing body announced in response to a dpa inquiry, the disciplinary committee has initiated proceedings against Gustavo Cabral of Mexican club CF Pachuca after evaluating the match report.
Real Madrid player Rüdiger accused his opponent of a racist insult in last Sunday's group match against Pachuca. The match was briefly suspended during injury time due to the incident.
"We stand behind Toni and will see what happens. The FIFA protocol will be activated, and we support him," Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said after the 3-1 victory. "This is unacceptable, and we believe what he said. The incident is currently under investigation."
In injury time, Rüdiger argued with Pachuca's Cabral. The agitated DFB defense chief then spoke to referee Ramon Abatti, who then crossed his arms in front of his chest.
This is the signal in a multi-stage protocol by FIFA that the referee has either witnessed a racist incident or been informed of it. He or she then decides whether or not to suspend the game. After a brief interruption, the match in Charlotte was completed.
Cabral denied the accusation after the match. "There was nothing racist about it. I called him a damn coward, as we say in Argentina. That's all," the 39-year-old Argentinian said, according to media reports. He used the phrase "cagón de mierda."
Rüdiger made his comeback in the match following knee surgery at the end of April, coming on as a substitute in the 78th minute. With four points from two matches, Real Madrid have yet to reach the round of 16 at the Club World Cup. Their final group match is on Friday night (CEST) against RB Salzburg, who are level on points. The Mexican side from Pachuca, who have no points, will face Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia, but are out of contention for the round of 16.
