The champions and the relegated teams have been decided. But who will compete in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League next year—and who will face relegation? The final Bundesliga weekend, with several decisions to be made, is approaching.
FC Bayern Munich are German champions, Bayer Leverkusen advance to the Champions League as runners-up, and VfL Bochum and Holstein Kiel are relegated to the second tier. These decisions were already made before the 34th matchday of the Bundesliga. Everything else is still up in the air. There are three contenders for two Champions League spots and a long-distance battle for sixth place in the Conference League. The relegation playoffs are also being sought in both leagues.
After Bayern and Bayer, two more teams are being sought for the Champions League. Eintracht Frankfurt (57 points, +20 goals) and SC Freiburg (55 points, -2 goals) are in the best position, but they play each other on Saturday ( 3:30 p.m./Sky and in the live ticker on ntv.de ). Borussia Dortmund (54 points, +17 goals) is lurking behind them and also has its ticket in its own hands.
Eintracht Frankfurt reaches the Champions League:
- in case of a win or a draw at SC Freiburg
- in the event of a defeat in Freiburg, if Dortmund does not win against Kiel
- in the event of a one-goal loss in Freiburg, if Dortmund only wins by a maximum of one goal difference
SC Freiburg reaches the Champions League:
- in case of a win against Frankfurt
- in the event of a draw against Frankfurt, if Dortmund does not win against Kiel
- in the event of a defeat against Frankfurt, if Dortmund loses against Kiel
Borussia Dortmund reaches the Champions League:
- with a three-goal victory against Kiel
- if they win against Kiel, if Freiburg does not win against Frankfurt
- if they win against Kiel, if Frankfurt loses in Freiburg and Dortmund makes up the three-goal goal difference
- in the event of a draw against Kiel, if Freiburg loses against Frankfurt
Special case : If Eintracht loses and Dortmund wins, both clubs could have the same number of points and the same goal difference (+18 or +19). In this case, the most goals scored counts, with BVB (68) currently ahead of Frankfurt (65).
Europa LeagueTwo clubs will represent the Bundesliga in the Europa League next year: the fifth-place finisher in the league and the cup winner, which will be determined on May 24 in Berlin between VfB Stuttgart and third-division side Arminia Bielefeld.
If Dortmund gets at least one point against Kiel, the fifth-place finisher will be among the aforementioned trio. FSV Mainz 05 (51 points, +12 goals) and RB Leipzig (51 points, +6 goals) also still have a chance of finishing fifth, but would need to make up three points and five (Mainz) and eleven (Leipzig) goals on Dortmund, respectively.
Conference LeagueMathematically, Dortmund, Mainz, Leipzig, and Werder Bremen (48 points, -6 goals) are in contention. However, given that they are three points and 18 goals behind Mainz, Bremen's chances are theoretical. Instead, Mainz and Leipzig are likely to face a long-distance duel.
Mainz 05 reaches the Conference League:
- in the event of a win against Leverkusen, if Leipzig does not make up the six-goal goal difference in the event of a win
- in the event of a draw against Leverkusen, if Leipzig does not win against Stuttgart
- in the event of a defeat against Leverkusen, if Leipzig loses against Stuttgart and does not make up the six-goal goal difference
RB Leipzig reaches the Conference League:
- if Mainz wins against Stuttgart and does not win against Leverkusen
- if Mainz wins against Stuttgart, if Mainz beats Leverkusen and loses the goal difference of six goals
- in the event of a draw against Stuttgart, if Mainz loses against Leverkusen
- in the event of a defeat against Stuttgart, if Mainz loses against Leverkusen and loses the goal difference of six goals
Relegation participants from the BundesligaFor the Bundesliga, either FC St. Pauli (32 points, -11 goals), TSG Hoffenheim (32 points, -18 goals), or 1. FC Heidenheim (29 points, -24 goals) will enter the relegation playoffs. St. Pauli is likely to avoid direct relegation, given a three-point and 13-goal cushion over Heidenheim and a home game against already relegated VfL Bochum.
1. FC Heidenheim has to go into relegation:
- in the event of a draw or a defeat against Werder Bremen
- in the event of a win against Werder Bremen, if Hoffenheim gets at least one point against Bayern
- in the event of a win against Werder Bremen, if Hoffenheim loses against Bayern and does not lose the six-goal better goal difference
TSG Hoffenheim has to go into relegation:
- if Heidenheim wins against Bremen, if Hoffenheim loses against Bayern and loses the six-goal better goal difference.
