Details still unclear: Severe burns: Former Bundesliga star Lúcio in hospital

Former Bundesliga star Lúcio was injured in a domestic accident. What exactly happened is unclear, but the fact that he's being treated by a multidisciplinary team doesn't bode well.

Former Bundesliga star Lúcio sustained burns in a domestic accident and is being treated in a hospital in Brasilia. The severity of his injuries was not immediately known. However, the Brazilian newspaper "O Globo" and the online portal Terra reported that the 47-year-old is being cared for by a team of doctors from various disciplines. The 2002 World Cup winner is conscious.

The central defender and former captain of the Brazilian national team played for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga from 2001. With Leverkusen, he finished runner-up in the 2002 Bundesliga and reached the DFB-Pokal final and the Champions League final. In 2004, he moved to FC Bayern Munich, where he remained until 2009 and won the German championship three times. He then played for Inter Milan and Juventus Turin.

Lúcio, whose full name is Lucimar da Silva Ferreira, was considered a defender with the heart of a striker. The crowd favorite's long, impetuous charges with the ball at his feet from central defense into the opponent's penalty area were legendary – often spectacular, sometimes risky. He ended his playing career in Brazil in 2019 at the age of 41.
