Tour de France: Valentin Paret-Peintre wins stage on Mont Ventoux

(sda)/(dpa) Valentin Paret-Peintre secured the first French victory of the year in the 16th stage of the Tour de France on Mont Ventoux. The 24-year-old Paret-Peintre prevailed in a two-man sprint against Irishman Ben Healy after 171.5 kilometers on the legendary Mont Ventoux. Colombian Santiago Buitrago took third place.

Tour leader Tadej Pogacar finished fifth. He took a few seconds off his pursuer Jonas Vingegaard and remained in yellow. Vingegaard tried three times in vain to attack Pogacar, but was unable to put the Slovenian under pressure.

In the overall standings, Pogacar remains at the top with a lead of 4 minutes and 15 seconds over Vingegaard. German hopeful Florian Lipowitz remains in third place overall, now 9 minutes and three seconds behind Pogacar.
