UEFA awards 2027 Champions League final to Madrid

On Thursday, the UEFA Executive Committee named Atletico Madrid 's home stadium, the Estadio Metropolitano, as the venue for the final of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League season. A meeting of the committee, led by German representative Hans-Joachim Watzke, in Tirana also decided that the 2027 women's final will be held at the National Stadium in Warsaw.

Atletico Madrid prevailed over rival Baku for the stadium. Azerbaijan's capital will therefore have to wait a while longer to host the Champions League final for the first time. The human rights situation in the authoritarian former Soviet republic is considered problematic.

In 2019, Baku hosted the Europa League final. Chelsea FC won 4-1 thanks to a strong performance against their city rivals Arsenal. After a 0-0 halftime score, the Blues, and especially Eden Hazard's brace, turned things around after the break, scoring four goals. Four matches of the 2021 European Championship were hosted in Baku. Formula 1 regularly visits Azerbaijan.

Next final in Madrid after 2019

The subsequent awarding of the final venue became necessary because Milan was stripped of its hosting role due to organizational problems surrounding the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. Next year's final will take place on May 30 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

Atletico Madrid's stadium hosted the Champions League final several years ago. In 2019, Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool FC won the title in a 2-0 final against Tottenham Hotspur and then celebrated in Madrid.
