The Deuter Climber scored highly in our 2024 test on hut-to-hut and multi-day tours with a size that stows a decent amount of gear without overtaxing young shoulders (22 liters). The slim fit ensures the backpack sits close to the body—perfect for stability even on narrow mountain trails. You can currently get the Deuter children's backpack at a substantial discount in the online shops of Sportscheck and Bergzeit, if you act fast!

This is what we liked about the children's backpack:

great for multi-day tours, slim fit

elastic side compartments for large drinking bottle

robust but soft hip belt

Note the size (130cm-168 cm according to Deuter), seems too big at 135 cm

We particularly like the stretchy side pockets: They offer space for a large water bottle. A sturdy, yet softer hip belt provides good support and distributes the load comfortably, so there's no pressure even on longer trips.

If you want to be well prepared for sudden rain, you'll need to pack a separate rain cover, as the Climber 22L doesn't have one built in. You should also keep an eye on the size: For six-year-olds or children around 135 cm tall, the backpack will still feel a bit bulky – Deuter recommends a size of 130 to 168 cm, which is something to keep in mind.
